We rarely write about coffee here, and sometimes we do.
The Gentlemen Baristas have a few locations in the Borough area of London. Union St is a narrow back street that gets more foot-traffic than traffic-traffic. On this street there is a small builders’ yard and other anonymous buildings. Only ‘The Coffee House’ the pub next door make any imprint on the eye. It is a tall and narrow building, squeezed between its neighbours with its elbows in. Bursting with character, it is bound to pop out like a tight set of pearls.
On a sunny day you can sit either side of the street. Like anywhere else, you can get your milky offerings. The latté is surely enjoyable. That is a little like travelling across the world and eating a meal deal from Marks & Spencers when you arrive.
Instead, when you come, order a filter. If they aren’t too busy ask for an Aeropress. Many of these baristas compete in coffee-making competitions, so put them to good use. The result is an opaque, viscous black-brown liquid with red trim. Smooth as cocoa. Get a second to walk with. It pairs well with a river view.
