Standing Start

Nervous wheels onto kind earth
Pedals turn under cautious feet
Supporting hand under the seat
Forward progress assured by protective company.

Knees and elbows meet in glee
First sensations of speed and ease
Disguise the lifting hand.
Only momentum and ignorance stand.

Yet belief makes its prints in the leather
And the bike rights its lists like a clipper
Comforting lies in the soft of the summer
Protected by trust’s hazy exhaust.
